Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)

Download Exergonix BESS Brochure

Exergonix has designed a community scale energy storage system for smart grid applications. This system uses the same nano based cells and patented technologies as our utility scale energy storage system (BESS). Operating at 4C with peaks up to 8C the 30kWhr battery is capable of peak delivery exceeding 200kW when coupled with an appropriate power conversion system which can be supplied by Exergonix or by the customer.

BESS - 1 MWh System Rack View inside the 1 MWh BESS SystemUsing the nano based cell technology, Exergonix utilizes its state of the art battery design to manufacture the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) for smart grid and other applications. The 1MW system is manufactured using a segmented 500KWh structure where there are two separate units that are each independently controlled by proven power control electronics.

The BESS is contained in a fully independent seismic rated enclosure that is approximately 45 feet long where the storage system, bidirectional converter, power controls, system voltage controls, and fire suppression are all included. Depending on the mode of operation the system can be installed in a building or a smaller enclosure where walk-in access is not critical.

Power Conversion System (PCS)
The PCS can be connected to an up-link device to monitor functionality and obtain real-time data on the system efficiency. Since each individual module is monitored using a stand-alone Battery Management System (BMS), a fault is easily identified during operation. All required communication is managed by the PCS and can be linked using a RS-485 communication protocol. The system is monitored and managed through the BMS on several levels for safety, cell balancing, predictive performance and other unique purposes.
Modularity
The BESS is designed to be modular in nature, the ability to scale up or down depending on the demand for energy storage gives the BESS superior flexibility. Exergonix is able to manufacture smaller kWh systems and are able to parallel 1MWh systems to achieve larger storage when needed. modules are designed with full flexibility for integration and are hot-swappable for continuous operation.
Other Applications
Other uses include:
  • A combination uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and frequency regulator in critical applications such as data centers and healthcare;
  • As a secondary power source where regulations limit the use of diesel generation.
ModularityAdvanced Lithium Polymer with Nano
The new and unique design that Exergonix is introducing is a novel technology to be used for future grid storage systems in a vast array of applications. The use of nano materials allows the battery to have significant increases in power, energy, and cycle life. Now energy storage systems can be systematically built to obtain the 10+ year calendar life needed in the real world..

Smart Grid Applications

Frequency Regulation
Exergonix overcomes the weakness of most conventional grid based load generation by using their patented technologies to regulate frequency. The BESS features rapid-response characteristic in milliseconds which allows the user to
regulate service.

Wind and Solar Integration
The BESS enables smoothing of fluctuations for wind and solar energy generation. The system provides a mechanism to store intermittent energy generation, which is typically seen with wind and solar, and provides consistent power to the user. Quick response capability alleviates rapid shifts in renewable energy generation and can act as a frequency regulator during transmission.
